Residence Permission for Non-EU students (D Visa)

Those Non-EU students who have entered Spain with a 90-Day D type Visa, awarded specifically for education and research, must apply for a Residence Permission, known as Foreigner Identity Card/NIE, within one month after their arrival in Spain, before their visa expires. This permission will replace the visa to regulate their stay in Spain, as well as allow them to travel freely in the Schengen countries. The maximum duration granted by the Foreigner Identity card/NIE is one year, so students who enroll in a study programme of more than one year has to renew their residence permission every year. The Foreigner Identity Card/NIE are given depending on the duration of the course or training to be carried out.

Important note 1:

Only those students with a 90-D type Visa need to issue the Foreigner Identity Card/NIE.

For EU students, instead of applying for the Foreigner Identity Card/NIE, they are required to issue a registration certificate in the Central Register of Foreigners. For more information, please check: Registration Certificate for EU Citizens.

Important note 2: once a student has arrived in Spain, it is not possible for them to exchange a 180-day study visa for a multiple entry visa or a longer visa within the country. You cannot request a visa extension. That is, in the event that you do not request the correct type of visa (e.g. 180-day D type), you must return to your country before it expires and go to the Spanish Embassy in your country to request a new visa. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to this section. Before you request your visa, please get in touch with us if you have any questions. Visas can only be issued in one’s country of origin or in the country where one legally resides.
